Galactica Guns

Check out this interesting write-up over at Hell in a Handbasket about some of the weapon props used on Battlestar Galactica:

"The Sci Fi Channel has been showing the new Battlestar:Galactica series. Some of the guns shown are either non-functioning props or existing handguns with extra crap bolted on to disguise their pedestrian nature. A good example of this are the sidearms that the pilots use while on a mission. They appear to fire some sort of armor piercing high explosive round that's fully capable of taking down a Cylon battle droid. (All photos from the series courtesy of GateWorld.net.)"

"However, not all the firearms used are examples of the prop sculptor's art. The majority of the guns shown are actual present day firearms, although ones that are chosen for their exotic profiles."

The sidearms are FN FiveseveN 5.7x28mm handguns with some doohickey mounted on the picatinny rail. The marines use Beretta CX4 Storm carbines, which actually fire pistol-caliber rounds (9mm, .40 s&w or .45 ACP). Not sure about the smaller sidearm that some of the cylons have, maybe a CZ. The 5.7x28mm round that the pilot's sidearm and some of the human insurgents use in their FN P-90's was actually developed to penetrate soft body armor that many countries use now. It's basically a .22 caliber bullet that goes REALLY fast. During Exodus part II I also saw the insurgents using norinco 5.56MM AK's, FN P-90's (with magazine removed?), Skorpion vz.61's, and the infamous south african "street sweeper".
