Wayne Hall of Syfy Portal is reporting that Battlestar Galactica has already been confirmed for a third season:
How much confidence does SciFi Channel have in two of its three top shows? Enough to pretty much give them a go-ahead for a third season.
Sources at SciFi Channel are reporting that SciFi has unofficially decided to award both "Battlestar Galactica" and "Stargate: Atlantis" third-season pickups. The news was shared by SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman during a guest appearance on Sci-Fi Saturday Night on New Hampshire's 610 WGIR.
This is great news! Let the BSG fandom continue!

Not to put a dampener in the enthusiasm, here, but we have to remember that the Sci Fi Channel VERY publicly and with much fanfare announced that "Farscape" had been renewed thru a fifth season... then proceeded to quietly CANCEL the show after production on the fourth season was done. Bonnie Hammer and her cronies are a bunch of liars. I won't believe that "Galactica" has been renewed for a full third season until the last episode of the third season has AIRED. Heck, at this point I only give 50/50 odds that we'll get a full second season!

I didn't follow farscape that closely. It was before the age of DVRs and I remember it was always on Friday night which is a bad time for me.
Did Farscape have the ratings BSG did?

Not really. Farscape's highest rated episode ever is matched with BSG's lowest. I'm pretty sure that it also cost more to produce--I recall reading that it was the most expensive show in Australia. I don't think we can consider the light green just yet, but odds are pretty good we'll be seeing a third season for BSG.

How many seasons will the new series have?

I suppose as long as the show keeps getting the ratings it will keep getting renewed!
