What if WWII was like Battlestar Galactica?

I came across a post at the Insane's World blog that frames the BSG story within an allegorical tale of the Nazi's during WWII. It is an interesting way to convince people to check out the show!

Date: December 29th, 1986, Time 0948 hours, a sub that was stationed in the Indian Ocean

gets a contact, its a group of ships the likes of witch they have never seen before. The crew is nervous as expected when form a far distance, the captain makes periscope depth and there in the cross hairs is a NAZI flag.

They have destroyed every city in America, the Soviet Union, just about every place possible and they were never noticed. How did it happen? How many ships are are there? Is there any one left on the planet to fight? Am I all that is left in the world to fight this new-old threat besides me?

Just remember that this was just the first 30 minutes of Battlestar Galactica. Substitute the Allied powers for the 12 colonies, the Germans for the Cylons, the lone Sub for the Battlestar Galactica and you got a start to an interesting new series.

Chicago Tribune puts BSG on top in 2005

The Chicago Tribune, my hometown paper, lists BSG in their top 10 shows of 2005:

"Battlestar Galactica," Sci Fi: There’s no antiseptic, morally upright future on display here. Just a lot of confused, conflicted people, in a battle to the death with "others" who look exactly like humans — and who say they are representatives of the one true God. The real joke on those who think "Galactica" is just another sci-fi show is that this gripping drama is, in fact, television’s most topical, incisive commentary on current events in our very troubled world.

Richard Hatch Adventure Cruise
By Jean Williams

See the photos

I am sending out my Christmas Greetings and my reminiscent of my Christmas present to myself. Let me tell you a story of my Vacation cruise with the very personable Richard Hatch ("Apollo" and "Tom Zarek").

Bon voyage dinner

We started cruising together the first night with a bon voyage dinner in Orlando, Florida. Most of the crew attended. Those who arrived late stopped by and said "hi". We knew it was going to be a great group from the laughter and hugs that accompanied the meal. Pauline said she needed a cigarette after watching Capt Apollo give a back massage to the cruiser across from her. As we walked back from the dinner, the plan was: Board the ship Carnival Glory and meet in the lobby.

The man and his material

Next day, Blam Ventures, publishers of Richard Hatches "Great War of Magellan" comics met us in the lobby and started the afternoon off with drinks. It was a gradual slide into dinner from there. Leisurely strolling the ship and finding shortcuts to all the party areas as well as taking pictures of everything and everyone soon became the activities of choice. I went straight to the spa and signed up for a hot stone massage...ahh the joy of it all. Sorry no pictures of the oil soaked towel wrapped cruisers!

Dinner was casual and we soon found our tables. There were twenty-four attendees and we rotated tables constantly to the bewilderment of our servers. Rising to the challenge, the serving crew managed to learn and continually provide our favorite beverages and desserts. A certain flour-less chocolate delight was consumed at an amazing rate, along with Champagne (thank you Tigger) and cognac, It was a wonder no one was sick.... sea sick that is...

The sushi bar with wonderful hot sake soon became the hangout after dinner. Once we had consumed enough liquid courage, the Karaoke bar became the nights playground. Jerry, a fellow passenger, sounded just like Dean Martin. His antics and singing put us all at ease, and we vowed to returned to perform the following nights.

Sunday was the first of many creative and inspirational seminars given by Richard Hatch. That was followed by a trip to Key West and a trolley tour. Almost the entire group boarded a trolley for the whole tour. Our driver just threw his hands up when we refused to get off at any of the stops and joined in the merriment. After the trolley ride, we all did some shopping before boarding the ship for Belize.

After dinner we were back in the Karaoke bar and were amazed at the "Prince" performance given by Drew, the Blam leader. Who knew you could "freeze" your vocal cords to reach a higher that pitch! Bravo!

Monday was a day of seminars and Richard played his Battlestar Galatica "Second Coming Trailer" and "The Great War of Magellan" trailer...if you haven't been able to see these trailers.... parts are available for viewing at the http://www.greatwarofmagellan.com/ site. The Second Coming Trailer is Richard's concept of how a continued TOS BSG would have looked...*sigh* if only.

Lunch was an adventure with everyone going to a different area of the ship ...I became lost just going to the restroom... BUT I found the soft ice cream machine... from then on known as THE DARKSIDE!After lunch, the "Acting From the Heart" workshop  was a very down to earth talk on life and how acting has enriched Richard's life. He certainly has a mesmerizing joy of life. You feel both humbled and privileged to be in his classes. Some impromptu scenes were worked out with directing prompts and the bonding of the group started.

We were a very diverse group but a joyful one. We separated for a swim, sun and spa... all going in different directions and met at dinner to confuse the wait staff once more. That night, we all sang each one of us alone and together in random abandonment. We followed this routine through-out the cruise... so much so, that when I was in line at the airport to go home... people in the line said, "Oh hi... Your the singer from the Karaoke bar."

Group outing

Tuesday was Belize, a shore excursion to River Wallace and Altun-Ha Mayan Ruins. Being a river rat, I enjoyed the boat ride up the river with monkeys, alligator's and Iguana's sunning themselves on the shore. Lunch was at the end of the boat ride followed by some shopping.

Stair master

It was a short bus ride to the Mayan Ruins. As Steve quoted to us, "They are ruins to some, to others a StairMaster". Climbing was the rule of the day, with wonderful views at the top. There was a lot of Karmic energy high on the front steps of one ruin. Our fearless leader Richard was waving from the top so up we went. On the way down two enterprising boys had a Boa and a Iguana you could pose with, for a price. After the climb we purchased Cokes and boarded the bus back to the harbor, back to the cruise ship.

Hot tubs were the order of the day after dinner, sake and singing although some of us preferred the colder salty pool. The bars had these wonderful Blue drinks called Windex. By this time, other cruisers had noticed that Apollo was on board and our group would include these others as the night and cruise progressed.

Mayan Trees

Wednesday was Costa Maya and the Kohunlich Mayan Ruins. This proved a challenge and we were soon on our way in two vans packed to capacity. As we drove along, our guide talked about the 100+ thousand unexcavated ruins dotting Mexico. Soon after, you could see the hills of ruins rising above the flat plains and coastal swamps. Once at the site, there were many choices of ruins to see and climb. The energy this time was found in the low places among the jungle growth near a group of stones called the race track. I referred to it as the Valley of Sighs. The stones scattered about seem to sigh as the winds passed over them. Huge trees covered the area, all of it bathed in sunlight. Out of the valley shade, the sun was a welcomed warmth on our skins. Some disrobed to enjoy it all. Apollo had a snack of fresh coconuts at the vendor area and gave a Blam Ventures leader a back rub before we all piled into a van... heading for lunch, drinks, and the beach.

Coconut for lunch

Entering the town of Costa Maya, we all claimed a spot on the beach. Some went shopping while others headed for bars, restaurants, and water. I was so excited about finally getting to swim in the wonderful lolling salty blue green, I forgot to take pictures! The water was very clear and shallow so you had a good view of where you were stepping. The swimming was wonderful! Apollo swam with the fishes and enjoyed the brace of salt and sun! The man never stops!

In the the low surf, some snorkeled although the coral reefs were out quite far. Dark Clouds in the distance told of the rain to come and sure enough, it did... just enough to rinse the salt water off and get our towels wet. But the sun came out after 15 minutes and all was warm and toasty again.

After drying off, finding our clothes and shoes we had one last drink, then hailed a taxi back to the pier. Some of the braver, crazier folks decided to walk. Their story was a topic of the dinner table that evening. After our usual sake and singing, we decided to partake of the dancing and these guys could shake it! Some of us followed the dancing with a show at the Amber Palace and others with a swim, still others more sake and champagne and a night on the deck. We all may try that next cruise!

Richard at the foul line

Thursday was a day at sea and two workshops with Richard. "Mastering Fear" was the topic of the morning workshop. This is a workshop everyone should take. It was insightful and comforting to share your life's experiences with people who supported and cared for you. Richard, as always, masterfully kept us on topic and took us under his wing to give guidance. We left this workshop with a very mellow feeling... pausing for a circle of back rubs before lunch. Some of us found the DARK SIDE and pigged out on Chocolate ice cream. Others found the light and shot some hoops before the next workshop.

A workshop of Personal Coaching followed with a smaller group of caring individuals with multiple life goals. *Sigh* By that time I had partied so much I lost my voice. I think the drink I shared with Jerry didn't help, since I noticed he too was loosing his voice. There was so much I wanted to say, BUT I guess I'll have to go on another cruise and retake this workshop...LOL! Just being there with all that energy was a life altering experience!

Dinner of Kings

That night we had a special formal dinner on board at the Emerald Room. This was a dinner of epicurean delight. The service and food far outshone anything previously enjoyed. We spent as much time admiring the food as we did eating it. *Sigh* to eat as kings at least once in your life was worth the cruise!

Joining together

Drinks at the Sushi bar and meeting the other cruisers, plus a group photo followed. This was a group indeed and any photo of 20+ people all energetically trying to outdo the next was a feat only a pro could handle! I am still waiting for a copy of that shot....Steve hello!

Friday morning found us all tying to do more and sleep less, some of us succeeding far to well. The last workshop was Richard's "Building Successful Relationships in Business and Life" This was attended by many. By this time, since I had no voice, I was communicating by writing messages to one and all with the ships bar crew writing the answers back. (Dear ones I can't talk, I can... still hear...) The lengths I go to communicate!

This workshop really solidified the group and progress that was made in many areas of well being. Each one left with the feeling that change was imminent, powerful, and worthwhile. Our lives "Oh Great One" have been forever altered by your wisdom and support. This was truly a cruise of light and hope for the future.

Did we ever find the "Vote for Tom Zarek" bumper stickers?

Party night

That night before dinner we had our farewell cocktail party thankfully next to the Sushi bar so the Sake flowed with the Windex's... I found that, after consuming untold quantities of raw ginger and very hot sake, I could be heard if only faintly. I must learn sign language!

Dinner followed with everyone finding friends at every table... friends you did not want to leave. Jim those Men in Black shades rock! Eva and Philip enjoy Germany! Karen you are my hero, let's cruise into the sunset!

The Final Fling

Later, back at the lounge, we met with many fellow cruisers not in our group for photos and drinks. It is fun and humbling to see grown people become 13 years old again when they meet their childhood Hero. Apollo was, as always, gracious, warm, open, and willing to share his struggle of trying to bring back the "Second Coming" of BSG and his new role as Tom Zarek in the new re-imaged BSG. No guys he didn't give us any spoilers... even when we tried "other means" on him.

Massages and Champagne were shared, instructions for debarking were confirmed, hugs, emails, tears and plans for another cruise were passed along the couches of well wishers. Even the crew of the Glory joined in for pictures with Apollo.

Richard Hatch, our fearless leader

This is my Christmas Story and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did living it.

So if you have a free week, and want to enrich your life many fold, come, join us next year in December it will be a vacation you will never forget!

--

Thanks goes out to Jean Williams for sharing her experience with us! I can only imagine the amount of pure BSG geeking that went on after a few drinks!

The best BSG Christmas present?

Let's here it! Leave a comment on this post. What Battlestar Galactica related stuff did you get for Christmas? I did not receive a single BSG related item, but I did convince a friend to buy himself a subscription to Netflix for Christmas so he can watch the show and he is now loving every minute of it.

I guess you could say I got NBS Universal another fan for Christmas. :)

So? What did you get?

Happy Holidays

Happy holidays to all of you out there in BSG fandom land. Nothing fancy, just a little message from me to you. I hope you are all unwrapping awesome BSG-related gifts tomorrow.

Of course the best present for all of us are the new episodes in January! Wow... 2006 already. That singularity is right around the corner!

Cheers,
Trapper Markelz

What does a BSG voice audition sound like?

A few days back, I posted about a casting call for voice actors for a BSG video game. I came across someone who sent in a submission:

Just sent in my audition lines for the new Battlestar Galactica: Reimagined MOD, after reading about it on The Unofficial BSG Blog. I'm sure they've had about 40 jizillion chicks sending in lines, so who knows if anything will come of it. But if nothing else, I tried!

If you want to hear the first of the lines, it's here: http://www.happylizard.net/orkut/MitchellFemale1.mp3. The sound quality's pretty crappy as I ended up recording it on my little cranky old iBook - but I don't expect the quality will make that much difference. It's my voice they'll want or not want, not my recording setup.

Hmmm... maybe I could use that voice clip in another BSG Techno song!

Good luck livenud!

Time calls BSG #1 show of 2005

Chris Howell over at The Great Link posted about this BSG mention in Time Magazine:

Time Magazine have named Sci-Fi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica as the Number #1 TV series for 2005: Writer James Poniewozik says that "most of you probably think this entry has got to be a joke. The rest of you have actually watched the show. Adapted from a cheesy '70s Star Wars clone of the same name, Galactica (returning in January) is a ripping sci-fi allegory of the war on terror, complete with religious fundamentalists (here, genocidal robots called Cylons), sleeper cells, civil-liberties crackdowns and even a prisoner-torture scandal.

The basic-cable budget sometimes shows in the production, but the writing and performances are first-class, especially Edward James Olmos as the noble but authoritarian commander in charge of saving the last remnants of humanity. Laugh if you want, but this story of enemies within is dead serious, and seriously good."

This is a pretty solid win for science fiction. It will be interesting to see if this continued positive press surrounding the show translates into viewer numbers!

Ron Moore signs up with NBC Universal

This link comes from Battlestar Galactica News:

"Battlestar Galactica" exec producer Ronald D. Moore has inked a rich overall pact with NBC Universal Television Studio, reupping for another two years.

Deal calls for Moore, who exec produced the first season of HBO's "Carnivale" before joining "Battlestar," to create and develop series, with an emphasis on sci-fi-themed projects.

He's already set up the NBC fantasy skein "Pen and the Sword" and "Warehouse 13," a quirky one-hour for Sci Fi Channel. Moore also will continue to steer "Battlestar," which kicks off the second half of season two Jan. 6.

A part of me is thinking this will be both good and bad for the show. Good in that Ron Moore gets additional influence with NBC and therefore more security for his projects... bad in that it might detract from his involvement with Battlestar Galactica directly. What are your thoughts on this announcement?

New BSG 2.0 DVD Trailer

It isn't anything we haven't seen before, but it is enough to create a little itch of excitement for the new episodes in January! Hollywood.com has posted a trailer for the new set of DVDs:

Battlestar Galactica 2.0 DVD Trailer

Thanks Galacticaa.net for the heads-up!

Thoughts on season two deleted scenes

If you listened to my Subject 2 Discussion interview, you know that I wasn't a huge fan of the first few deleted scenes that I watched from season two. I made it up to episode 2.04 and decided to stop watching them. Here are the notes I took on those first few deleted scenes:

Deleted scenes for 2.01
Bad acting... bad makeup... poor story. It was a great idea to cut the flashback stuff down to a minimum.

Deleted scenes for 2.02
The way Tigh handles the situation (all the stuff about aft damage control) ends up being Adama's idea not his. This is very disappointing in my mind and weakens Tigh even further in a situation in which he was already weak.

The Tigh and Apollo confrontation was silly. "Im going to have to take a chance on it" line was super cheesy. The Gaius six scene was a bit interesting. Her blatant prediction that no one will live to see earth except him could be a bit of foreshadowing. Interesting that Crashdown hears Gaius talking to himself. I don't remember that happening very often. The Helo/Kara stuff was pretty cool... a little more texture around their situation.

Deleted scenes for 2.03
A pretty awesome scene where Billy kills Roslin has all sorts of unforeseen implications about Laura's subconscious. Is Billy a Cylon? Is Laura's mind warning her with the vision?

Deleted scenes for 2.04
The scene with Lee and Dualla is pretty throw away. It works better the way it was cut I think.

Honestly, I was so thrown after watching the deleted scenes from 2.02 that I really couldn't continue on. I guess there is something to be said for deleted content staying on the cutting room floor. How are we, the audience, suppose to absorb something that wasn't worth putting into the show, but is later given to us? How should these scenes effect the canon?

I would initially say that it all depends on the context under which they are cut. If the scene is cut for length, that is one thing... if it is cut for quality, that is entirely different. Maybe there should be a disclaimer at the beginning of the scene identifying it either way so we know under which context to absorb the material?

I guess the question I would ask you, the readers, is: Did you watch the deleted scenes? Did it fundamentally change your perception of the characters or the plot in a positive way? A negative way?

A part of me is starting to think that watching deleted scenes is almost as bad as reading spoilers. If the scene had something truly important, it would have been included... maybe it is best to not know what was left on the floor. In the case of Tigh and episode 2.02, I sort of wish I had my initial impressions back.

BSG wins an AFI 2005 TV award

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced the official selections of AFI AWARDS 2005 and Battlestar Galactica is on the list!

436,000 illegal downloads of BSG per week?

According to NBC Universal Television Group President Jeffrey Zucker, "Every week, there are 436,000 illegal downloads of 'Battlestar Galactica,'" I mean wow... that sounds a bit high to me... but ok... maybe not. I wonder where they got the numbers. The story is posted at SyFy Portal:

Just how bad is piracy affecting television shows like "Battlestar Galactica"? Enough to make network executives realize they have an untapped market, and even more than enough to do something about it.

Three new BSG promos

The wait is almost over! Justine of the Tahmoh Penikett blog linked me to three new promos for the show. They are "perfect" promos in that they get you stoked about the show, yet give nothing away!

Three new promotional videos for the second half of Season 2 are now available. Helo only appears briefly.

Go get the links

Thanks to Justine for sending these to me... I have been slacking off a bit in the off-season on BSG news. Good thing there are plenty of sites out there that are on top of their game!

As for the clips, I always forget Jamie Bamber has such an accent! In the positive category, it seems like the Baltar character is making a nice come back. That is good to see. As I am sure you have seen me write, I believe him to be the most complicated character on the show and to have him missing was quite noticeable. Maybe they are going to change that? Here is hoping!

How about some BSG Trivia?

It is a little slow around the BSG news desk as we all sit, patiently waiting for the return of our fine show! Meret over at the 13th Colony posted some fun trivia tid-bits for your enjoyment:

Some BSG Trivia on IMDB I hadn't seen before

In episode #1.11, in the struggle on the floor of the bar, a beer bottle with the label "Hawryliw" is used by Lee to defend himself. 'Ken Hawryliw' is the property master for the production.

Katee Sackhoff was able to continue wearing her thumb ring while shooting by explaining it away as Zak Adama's ring.

Jane Seymour was offered the role of Admiral Nelena Cain. When she turned down the offer, Ronald D. Moore offered the role to Michelle Forbes and she accepted. [JS played Apollo's wife in the first BSG.]

The characters Tarn and Selix, who first appear in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 2", were named at the behest of Aaron Douglas, who plays Chief Petty Officer Tyrol. Douglas noted that the two were originally listed in the script generically (Technician 1 and 2) and, recognizing the potential of the two characters, consulted with others in the cast to give them proper names. Douglas then inserted their new names into his lines on every take.

Your iPod, powered by BSG

Mike Olsen (managizzle) beat me to my feeds this morning with an email about a post on Engadget:

So those rumors were true, Apple is now offering NBC programming in addition to SciFi (Battlestar Galactica) and USA (Monk) networks for $1.99 a pop to your iPod just like the ABC offerings of yore.

More steps in the right direction! Pay attention folks. We are witnessing the evolution of an entire medium. Time-shifting and place-shifting are redefining television in front of our very eyes. I actually consumed some video on the train this morning. I downloaded episodes of Star Trek: New Voyages and watched them on my Treo 650. Good stuff!
