Prepare for the BSG prequel!

Whoa big news. You look away from your news aggregator for a second and the entire fanscape changes in the blink of an eye! A spin-off series?!?! See for yourself:

"Caprica" will be set more than 50 years prior to the events of "Battlestar Galactica" and focus on the lives of two families -- the Adamas (ancestors of future Galactica commander William) and the Graystones. Humankind's Twelve Colonies are at peace and on the verge of a technological breakthrough: the first Cylon.

Yes... you read that right... Is BSG pulling a Stargate?! Sure seems like it!

I am really trying to figure out if this is good or bad. Sure more sci-fi is a good thing, but three seasons in? It seems a tad ambitious... Sure I will watch the hell out of both shows, but still... I can't help but think it is a bit premature. I don't think I have ever heard of a show that split its time lines being on the air at the same time. Stargate is parallel. Star Trek was parallel. This is going to be crazy!

So what do you all think? Crazy news today!

Ummmm... i believe my BS alarm just went chernobyl.

At least, I hope that is total and complete BS.

Quite frankly, I have never particularly been interested in prequels... cause that's where metachlorians(sic) come from. I don't really feel the need to know every single little detail that lead up to our current show, as I can't think of an instance where a prequal ever made a francise 'better'.

Furthermore, I would have no real particular issues if battlestar was just a short 3 season series, especially if that means that the quality is consistant, and the conclusion was devoid of cop-outs. Quality over quantity.

If ron moore and david Eick keep extremely close tabs on the scripts, I would be willing to give it a chance... otherwise, screw it.

Like when Warren Ellis was pulled off the Authority.

i couldn't have said it better myself, so i won't. american television needs to take a clue from british television, and hbo for that matter. less, sometimes, IS more.

Think about the good thing- Ron and David aren't out to sell plastic toys like George was for the prequels. I'm cautiously optimistic about this.

Agreed, but at the same time, ron moore has a history of satisfying long term shows.

I just can't imagine any way that, pilot aside, ron moore and david eick would be available to watch the scripts, as they've had a hard enough time keeping the quality up towards the end of season 2.

anyway, if anyone needs me, I'll be over here vomitting uncontrollably.

I say give it a chance, there's no harm in doing so since you can't change that there's a spinoff series.

I'm excited about it. I don't see how any "parallel" series would be able to avoid doing a variation of BSG.

I thought BSG was only going to be 1 season. I was shocked that it had two, and now going to be three. I thought it would be like an HBO 10-12 episode ordeal. But if season three has good quality episodes and closes with a three-hour mini-movie episode i would be happy.

The prequel, star trek's enterprise came out some years later and i think the BSG prequel should do the same. wait till the main BSG show has ended, they find earth or whatever, then come out with the prequel the next coming TV year.

Hey, I am all for this, of course I can't help but think that Battlestar Caprica was the name of a joke/hoax a scifi site made.

As this would just be another mini-series, that raises the potentail over it being and actual series.

I think that Adama's father being a Civil liberties laywer will mean that he is involved in a high profile case that determine's that in colonial society that the Cylons have no rights, like a Dred Scott case or a Plessey Vs Furgeson.

So, the big question is who plays the young Adama?

"I don't think I have ever heard of a show that split its time lines being on the air at the same time."

I have. "Angel" was spun-off from "Buffy" after three seasons (just like "Caprica" would be form the new BSG). I do not, however, know whether "Angel" was conceptualized as early as "Caprica".

Did Angel take place at different points in time though or was it parallel?

Parallel.

Spin offs are a different beast altogether in my mind.

but still... I'm having horrific images of baby adama holding hands with the first cylon.

.... still vomiting uncontrollably.

wow... I wasn't there for the whole "STARBUCK HAS A VAGINA!!!!" controversy... but I feel like I understand now.

I just realized that the new Dr Who has a post-s2 spin-off, too - Torchwood.

And the Good Doctor is getting another spinoff with that robot dog.

it could be interesting. we see a young adama as husker in the colonial fleet.

we see a new and shiny galactica all plated up and ready for war. in fact, she might even be one of a kind, a new ship etc.

lots of action, big fleet battles as human fights cylon.

but my concern is quality. both series could survive in parallel , provided the quality is there.

It just appears to be a mini-series, not another series.I think that will be a strong point, Like how Babylon 5 did movies to flesh out the back stories.

Trapper, Angel tookplace in parralel, with certain actors crossing over at points for the plot. I actually think that Angel is the superior series, in terms of plot and characterization.

Make it a mini series...

1,2 Basics of Colonial life rise of cylon AI

3,4 flesh out young Adama and Saul

5,6,7 The Cylon War

8 The armistice and young Starbuck and Lee
or a criminal investiagtion of kidnappings related to the creation of humanoid cylons.

9, 10 Rise of the human models and plans for the major attack.

That works...

oopla, usually miniseries are 3-4 episodes long - not 10.
