BSG Webisodes on the way
Gateword is reporting some interesting news... exclusive web-only episodes of Galactica:
Battlestar Galactica jumps to the digital world with a series of original webisodes, now in production. SCI FI will debut the series as part of its new "SCI FI Pulse" online broadband network.
GateWorld has learned that an early webisode will be titled "Crossroads." It is not yet known whether this is the first episode, nor how many installments will be produced.
Well this is getting interesting. First a spin-off, then mini-episodes? If you haven't checked out Scifi Pulse yet, head over to SciFi.com and give it a try.
I think this is a great move. Little things like this will help flesh out the show... it is very equivalent to the Clone Wars cartoons for Star Wars... or the Animatrix shorts for the Matrix... maybe BSG will even go animated with a few of them? That could be fun.
It seems like this third season is going be pretty crazy... not only do we have an extremely compelling story shaping up, but all sorts of cross-platform-muli-media goodness to keep us inundated with more BSG than we will know what to do with. All that needs to happen now is for them to announce a new video game and my life will be complete!

All I ask is that they will have these out on DVD at some point in time. I will become a bitter, angry 17 year old if they don't. But hey, this is great news. I really love this idea since I think of how popular the Clone Wars shorts were in filling out gaps in the movies.

except for the part where generial grevious was actually bad-ass in the animation.
man, aren't I the voice of cynisism.
but, as a change of pace, this is probabily the first time that mini eps would be a good idea... because bsg episodes really are too dense for their own good. Sometimes I feel like the film is just ready to burst out of it's 40 minute slot. Obviously a lot had to be cut out... as... you know... a lot of those "last time on bsg" showed scenes that weren't previously aired.

Genndy Tartakovsky can't help it that George made Grevious a crappy villian lol.

Aragorn - I agree... it freaks me out when I see "previously on bsg" scenes that never happened in the eps. It messes with your mind.

With a new series and the mini-episodes I worry that the quality may suffer. Better to tell one story incredibly well than to fill in every secondary detail and back-story and wring every last penny from the potential audience. I'd prefer to wait until October and watch a finely crafted arc of stories with incredible performances and eye-popping production values than watch five minutes of BSG on my cell phone.
But that's just me ...

See, I thought it was just me that freaked out with those 'previously on BSG' scenes that just didn't exist.
I think the mini-episodes are a great idea. It will certainly slake my current lust for all things BSG, until the 3rd season rolls around.

Tewley - believe me when I say that your take mirrored my own snap reaction when I read this.
But once again, I feel like this is the exception to the rule, especially when you take the deleted scenes into consideration.
While most movies, I go through the deleted scenes, and I see exactly why they cut something out, I find that those provided with the BSG dvds... very frequently I wonder why they decided to leave them out. well... obviously time frame, but I feel like a lot of the episodes could've been a bit better had it been provided with a little bit longer time slot.
So... again, I don't think this is a horrible idea.
And I remember when they aired "black market" and my other and I thought we had gone crazy during the recap.

Are we assuming that these mini-eps will be animated? I kind of cringe at the thought, but I can't imagine that the cast will have time to film the full-length episodes AND the mini ones too.
