Firefly writer pens a BSG script
A few readers emailed in with this news. Jane Espenson will be writing an episode of Battlestar Galactica for season three. From Jane's website:
Jane is writing an episode of Battlestar Galactica and she couldn't be more thrilled! Air dates will be announced when we know them.
I have to say that I was a huge fan of Firefly, not while the show was airing, but quite a long time afterward on DVD. Jane wrote the episode Shindig which was definitely one of my favorites. It will be interesting to see how her sense of humor and wit translates to the much darker characters of Battlestar Galactica.
I wouldn't mind seeing a tad more humor in Battlestar Galactica. I feel the storytelling should be allowed to take itself completely seriously, but it is nice to have characters that can look all the setbacks and challenges in the face and make fun of their situation. Baltar has this element to him... Kara does as well... but often in a very hopeless sort of manner... not the camaraderie that was pervasive on Firefly. Who knows if such a dynamic is possible on BSG. I guess with Jane we might find out.
I would never want BSG to become Firefly... but I wouldn't mind seeing them experiment a little bit with the dynamics of humor during the utter hopelessness of the Cylon occupation.

Have you listened to Espenson's commentary on the firefly DVD?
Firefly has already been on BSG. Remember in the mini-series right before laura roslin finds out she has cancer. Serenity is one of about six ships that flies overhead to land at a nearby spaceport.
And just an aside, I think that it is very unlikely that she will work on an occupation episode, as by now they are al probably done being written and shot.

Don't forget about "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down"...wait, was that the title of that episode? Remember how full of humor that one was? Like when Tigh's wife was flirting with Apollo under the dinner table in front of everyone? That episode was definitely out of the norm, but it was really fun too!

I love "Tigh Me Up..." since it's a diversion from the norm, but I heard that had a lot to do with Edward James Olmos having a big hand in making that episode as far as the story went.

I was also thinking of the episode where baltar was accused of being a cylon conspirator. That episode was hilarious.
"THAT'S IT! NO MORE MR NICE GAIUS!!!!"
also... shindig.... that's the episode where Mal gets into a tangle with a chivilrus aristicratic snob, right?

Yeah... I especially like the scenes with Kaylee talking shop with the boys at the party. Funny stuff. It's just a great fun episode in my opinion.

Ah yes, it was. I do believe it was also the first episode that suggested romantic interest between mal and inara… very interesting dynamics.
Though it has to be said
*spoiler*
WHY DID THEY KILL OFF BOOK!?!?
Seriously. There went any possibilities of a good sequel to Serenity.
