Mr. Brown visits BSG post-production

Check out the adventures of Mr. Brown as he went behind the scenes of BSG at Universal Studios!

We were at Universal Studios for a meeting and got a chance to visit the bits of the studios that tourists cannot go to. And yes, we got to meet the guys who do post-production on BSG. When we were there, they were working on Season THREE!!!

Beware of what some people might consider ever-so-minor spoilers. Nothing to freak about.

Revised opening credits

Check out this modification of the Battlestar Galactica opening credits by Deuteronomy69. If you haven't seen all of season 2, there are spoilers... My friend Kevin sent this one in:

I like the introduction of Baltar's line at that moment.

BSG Homeworld 2 mod

Are you a strategy gamer specializing in interstellar tactics deploying capital ships and fighters in an effort to turn your enemies into space debris? If you are than you have probably played Homeworld 2 and are eagerly looking forward to the Battlestar Galactica mod!

I am not a big real-time strategy gamer, let alone in the three dimensions of space... but as a gamer I can seriously appreciate the effort that went into this.

Free the BSG Mini-series

Dave Rogers sent an email to the SciFi Channel via their feedback form. He asked the following:

I rather hope someone actually reads these things.

Saw Ron Moore's interview in the Seattle Times and his answer to the question about whether or not BSG could appeal to a "mainstream audience" rang true to me.

I'm a fan, and I've managed to convince a few of my friends, who otherwise would not watch a science fiction program, let alone a remake of Battlestar Galactica, to watch the show and they've become fans.

You need to lower the barrier to entry represented by the series' name "Battlestar Galactica." The way to do that is not to change the name, but to make it easier for people to give it a chance, to take a risk that their time and attention won't be wasted.

As I'm sure you're (whoever "you" are) aware, this is not a series you can really just start watching at the beginning of the new season. It really demands that you begin at the beginning, and that means the mini-series.

Why not make the mini-series a free download at the iTunes Music Store?

So what do you think of Dave's idea? He wanted this to go viral, so I am posting it to help out the cause. Why not make the mini-series free online at this point?

I question it though... Is making it available for free on iTunes really count as mass market? Doesn't a well placed DVD in a Blockbuster reach more people? The people who will sit and watch a science fiction mini-series on their computer monitor aren't really the same people who download Jack Johnson singles onto their iPod... i mean sure there might be some over lap there but I am betting not much.

Galactica Battlebuddies, Series 2

I love the Tigh character with the bottle... out of all of em, I think I would have to get Tigh and Baltar and have them posed kicking each other's asses. I like how Tyrol comes with a "dream diary" HA!

Battlestar commission pic -- I squeezed as many characters in here as I could (I was gonna add even more, but I knew I had to stop somewhere). Some of the likenesses were tough, but I'm happy with how Adama turned out, and he was the one I was fearing to draw the most. So I'm fairly satisfied. By the way, I documented the various stages of this thing, so if you wanna check it out, click here.

Justine from the Tahmoh Penikett blog has a great post up about someone who mapped the BSG set locations using Google Earth:

New art from Grant Gould

Remember Grant Gould? I have posted about him before. He has a new BSG sketch up. It is his interpretation of BSG action figures!

These aren't real toys, obviously.. This is just me messing around and wishing I were in charge of designing Battlestar action figures for kids. Not that it's a kids show or anything.. heh :)

Cylon with light-up red eye!! Apollo with toaster-blaster!! Starbuck with trusty sidearm! I'm thinking there'd have to be a Starbuck variant -- a rec room version with cigar in mouth.

The TV Fodder Season 2 BSG primer

Did you miss a few episodes during the first half of Battlestar Galactica season 2? Could you not buy or find the DVDs? Do you not have time to watch the marathon? Maybe this primer over at TV Fodder can help you out!

To gear up for the January 6th resumption of Season 2, here's a cheat-sheet of the major plot points from the season so far. SO MUCH has occurred, it's impossible to include everything in a concise way. Of course, it's also hard not to go on and on about the show so I TRIED to be as brief as possible.

What does a BSG voice audition sound like?

A few days back, I posted about a casting call for voice actors for a BSG video game. I came across someone who sent in a submission:

Just sent in my audition lines for the new Battlestar Galactica: Reimagined MOD, after reading about it on The Unofficial BSG Blog. I'm sure they've had about 40 jizillion chicks sending in lines, so who knows if anything will come of it. But if nothing else, I tried!

If you want to hear the first of the lines, it's here: http://www.happylizard.net/orkut/MitchellFemale1.mp3. The sound quality's pretty crappy as I ended up recording it on my little cranky old iBook - but I don't expect the quality will make that much difference. It's my voice they'll want or not want, not my recording setup.

Hmmm... maybe I could use that voice clip in another BSG Techno song!

How about some BSG Trivia?

It is a little slow around the BSG news desk as we all sit, patiently waiting for the return of our fine show! Meret over at the 13th Colony posted some fun trivia tid-bits for your enjoyment:

Some BSG Trivia on IMDB I hadn't seen before

In episode #1.11, in the struggle on the floor of the bar, a beer bottle with the label "Hawryliw" is used by Lee to defend himself. 'Ken Hawryliw' is the property master for the production.

Katee Sackhoff was able to continue wearing her thumb ring while shooting by explaining it away as Zak Adama's ring.

Jane Seymour was offered the role of Admiral Nelena Cain. When she turned down the offer, Ronald D. Moore offered the role to Michelle Forbes and she accepted. [JS played Apollo's wife in the first BSG.]

The characters Tarn and Selix, who first appear in "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part 2", were named at the behest of Aaron Douglas, who plays Chief Petty Officer Tyrol. Douglas noted that the two were originally listed in the script generically (Technician 1 and 2) and, recognizing the potential of the two characters, consulted with others in the cast to give them proper names. Douglas then inserted their new names into his lines on every take.

I'm a geek, and this made me laugh

This came down my feeds and it gave me a chuckle:

It saddens me a bit to see BSG loose the nitty-gritty internal consistency I've always loved. The whole "Cylon virus" and "hacking our mainframe" crap is pretty bad. BSG still rocks my socks; don't get me wrong. But I can't help but wonder:

How exactly do you reformat a Battlestar? Is it like format c:? Or mkfs /dev/galactica?

Sneaking onto the BSG set

It looks like Pat was able to get himself onto the set during a filming of the BSG episode Flight of the Phoenix. I didn't really think there were any spoilers... he talks about the scene they were filming which is pretty non-descript. Go check out his story:

It was a long shot, considering my previous experiences with the Vancouver Film Studios, but I showed up today with a drink I bought at the Costco across the street, and just stood in front of the gate by Studio G. There were extras in Galactica uniforms having a smoke break, and dinner was being served. Chief Tyrol showed up with a book. About 5 minutes in, a lady came to ask me who I was, and if I needed in. She termed me "a fan" and continued about her business. Then a security guard came. I thought he was going to kick me out, but he just asked what was being filmed, out of his own curiosity. After that, my drink finished so I went to get a refill at Costco, and came back. Another 15 minutes in, the actors and crew were all looking at me wondering who I was. Eventually, an extra pointed me out more directly, and the same lady came up to have a chat with me. I told her I'm crazy about the show, and that there's zero chance of me getting an official way in, so I was just standing around until someone like her came around. She asked me if I was certifiably crazy, in that if she were to let me in, if I would start screaming during a take or something. She seemed surprised that I managed to find that they were filming there. Then, whether I was armed. I just gave her my Swiss Army knife and my backpack, and she let me in! She told me to tell anyone who asks that I'm a friend of hers. I was astonished this worked out!

Who do you want to see at the United Fan Con?

Justine of the Tahmoh Penikett blog is asking for help:

So United Fan Con is polling visitors as to which Galactica stars they'd like to see at the convention in November. Now as the con is in New England, I know it probably doesn't interest many of you, but I could go, so please vote as a favor to your friendly Tahmoh news provider. :) Plus he's currently only got 3 votes, which is kind of sad. Show your support for Tahmoh!
I just checked and Tahmoh has 22 votes... You don't have to vote for him though... if you like in the New England area pick who you would you like to see!

Easiest BSG drinking game EVAR!

BeaucoupKevin has invented the easiest BSG drinking game I have ever seen...

BeaucoupKevin Presents: The Completely Unofficial
Battlestar Galactica Drinking Game!

When Saul or Ellen Tigh drink, take a drink.

No, really, that's it.

So say we all.

I don't know about you guys, but I normally watch BSG on saturday morning... so it is probably a bit early for "drinking" although I often throw a dash of Bailey's Irish Cream in my coffee because it tastes to good!

What do you think of the game? Go leave Kevin a comment.

Do you dream about Battlestar Galactica?

It seems moiety does! Check out his crazy BSG/Scifi Channel dream:

just awoke from a brief nap, and had the weirdest dream ever.

Okay, so I'm on Battlestar Galactica, right? And Adama is there, locked in some storage room thing. And he's being attacked by -- get this -- a fusion of Cylon and Wraith who looks like a vampire Number Six. (Seriously -- my brain just merged Cylons and Wraith. It was really freaky).

And she was feasting on Adama, except she was literally eating him. As in, a piece of his abdomen was missing, and she was eating it. And she gave him some to eat as well. And -- wait, yes! -- Number Six was the Cylon Queen. And... you know how they show the number of survivors at the beginning of the show? Well, that number was the number of bodies left to eat for the Cylons, and she remarked how there were precisely that many bodies in the adjoining storage room, sleeping/hibernating or something. And she said to Adama that humans taste "neutronic" (don't ask, I don't know).

Read about the rest of this crazy dream!

I know I have had a few crazy dreams involving BSG... the only one I can remember was after a long evening playing Battlefield 2 on the PC and some of the characters from BSG infused themselves with a scenario that tool place on one of the maps... it was a while back and I don't really remember the specifics.

Have you had any BSG dreams? Share them in the comments.

Are you a BSG multi-watcher?

This guy has seen "Scattered" six times and counting. Are you like him? Are you a multi-watcher?

Well after watching the first episode "Scattered" of the second season of Battlestar Galactica about 6 times, I think I'm ready to give my verdict.

Read the review

But the real question is, do you watch the episodes multiple times? Do you watch them once and then again with the podcast commentary? Leave a comment and let me know!

Personally, I am a single episode watcher. I listen to the podcast commentary on the train monday mornings. I have done a few season one marathons with friends who don't have cable, but I rarely watch the episodes a second time by myself. I might go back and re-watch certain parts to find moments talked about in the podcast, but that is about it. So how about you?

Link to the Aaron Douglas Adoration Society

It is fitting that after a strong performance in episode 2.01, that I share a link to the Aaron Douglas Adoration Society sent to me by J.P. Crandall:

I am pleased to announce the creation of the Aaron Douglas Adoration Society, the Official Fan Club for Aaron Douglas. We are a group of Aaron’s fans coming together in support of Aaron and his many endeavors.

Mary McDonnell Fan Project

Carolelombard made a post to the Ladies of Galactica community about her plans to honor Mary McDonnell:

I love BSG and I haven't even seen Season 1 yet. I am so excited about Season 2 starting that I came up with a little fan project. I think it would be neat to do a card for the start of the new season of BSG for Mary McDonnell. Tasteful, classy, not unlike Mary herself. Anyway, we don't have time on our side. The new season of BSG premieres July 15. So please either leave a your name and/or short comment to include on the card at my lj or email me at carolelombardfan@bellsouth.net. Spread the word on BSG communities. The more that respond the better. I am even willing to include small pics and banners for sites. Just as long as the banners are for BSG related sites. You can send those to my email as well. ASAP. Remember this is going to be a card for Mary and it would be great if we could show what kind of fan following MM and BSG have here on the Web and Live Journal.

If Mary is your girl, go help Carol out!

Geek overload

This is one of those items that is even too geeky for me to understand... but I can appreciate it.

If you play the massive multi-player on-line game called World of Warcraft and are also a Battlestar Galactica fan, you will probably dig this. For those of us that do not play WoW, we are left in the dark.

This is a World of Warcraft movie providing The Battlestar Galactica intro adapted to the world of Azeroth.

Download the movie from Fileplanet

The author of the movie took the intro music and cut it into a sequence featuring characters from the game. I downloaded it... watched it... and I don't get it... but then again, I don't spend a lot of time in Azeroth so the references and humor are lost on me.

Enjoy Wow/BSG fans if you are out there... if you are, leave a comment!

Name that location

Justine over at the Tahmoh Penikett blog has a creative post going. She posted a bunch of screen shots of different BSG locations. If you know where they are, post a comment!

Okay, I've excluded Adama and Tigh because I'm not too fond of them - and they always look too sour. I've also excluded Tyrol or Boomer/Tyrol in protest of no Helo. Hey, I'm equal opportunity when there is equal choice :P.

Crossover SG1/BSG fiction madness!

There is a good amount of quality BSG fiction floating around. This story caught my eye because it is a crossover piece between Stargate SG-1 and BSG. I noticed it because a good friend of mine is a huge Stargate fan. I don't watch the show, only because I really don't have time to fit it in with my other Sci Fi obsessions (Star Trek DVDs), but this piece of fiction was a fun little ride.

Song: We Are Now Free by Hans Zimmer
Size: 17,279kb zipped (wmv format)
Notes: After re-watching Gladiator recently I remember how jubilant yet mournful this song was.  It also reminded me so much of the BSG score that I kept going back to it in thinking of a song to make an overarching piece.  This video was me basically asking 'what price freedom' in the BSG verse.   Full of challenges, victories, defeats, and tragedies through individual character's eyes and their interactions.

"Dark-Thoughts.net is maybe not the first site about Battlestar Galactica, but is definitely the first site with high resolution photography of the series. You will find here altogether more then 460 episode and promotion pictures, including some wallpapers and trailers."

Season 2 Fan video

Justine at the Tahmoh Penikett blog (first time I spelled his name without looking it up) as a link to a fun video:

"sarahbell05 has made a fun Season 2 promo video. It made me realize how much I can't wait for the new season to start..."

Go get the link

I think the verdict is that any video you merge with the Cells by The Servant song gives me chills. That song is perfect for trailers!

Wikipedia Galactica grows

If you haven't been over to the Wikipedia site for Battlestar Galactica lately, go check it out. There is tons of information on there these days, perfect for brushing up on your show knowledge. There is a great Season 1 synopsis that identifies all the story arcs.

I would also suggest keeping an eye on The Battlestar Wiki.

Hornbots

This post made me laugh:

No one had heard from the Cylons in 40 years... then they got horny!

"So I started watching the Battlestar Galacta miniseries at the gym today (thanks, Scot!), and I was seriously worried during some of the early scenes that someone was going to look on the screen of the treadmill DVD player and scold me for watching porn."

"Now I see why you guys like it so much. :)"

So funny and so true... I don't know how my "eye rolls" I have gotten from my wife (who is not a sci-fi fan) when she happens to walk in on a Baltar/Six encounter... "No really hon! It is cerebral sci-fi!!"

Boomer/Helo music videos

The Tahmoh Penikett blog is offering up links to a few really good Helo/Boomer music videos:

"projectgalem over at So Alive has created another fantastic, high quality Boomer/Helo video. If you're a Helo fan, you should be sure to check it out.

Watching these videos REALLY reminds me how much I miss having a new episode every week! I might have to spend more time in the Galactica Vids community!

Nothing is safe from a camera phone these days...not even the TV guide cover of Battlestar Galactica.
